I’ve been a member of Saga Farmann since 2022 and am looking forward to sailing the Mainz-Danube through an epic landscape as well as modern and old German towns! I’m from Øystese in Hardanger, and have been sailing our own familys vikingship Tyra (36ft) for 18 years.

I live in Kongsberg with my husband Trond, a dog, two cats, five hens and a rooster. I have been part of the Farmann Båtlag since it was launched in autumn 2018, and on this journey, I will participate in three stages, 1, 3 and 8. They’re all very different and on this last leg I am looking forward to sailing in the Bosporus. 

I am Tore Dammyr, from Norway, and have been on Viking voyages with Saga Farmann every summer since she was launched. I am from Lillestrøm, near Oslo, and I am very fond of the sea and boating. The expedition to Myklagard (Istanbul) will be an epic experience with a historical rush. Sailing and mastering a Viking ship together with nice fellow sailors is a great experience that I can really appreciate. I like all the positions on board, I also have the necessary competence certificate, so in time I look forward to becoming captain, or Høvedsmann.  On the first stage I will be Tack-man and Chef and on the eight stage I will be in charge of Media. 

Morten Molteberg from Hole, Norway.  I am 56 years old, I have three children and one grandchild. In my spare time, I volunteer at the Hardraade vikingship guild, where we are building almost the same ship as Saga Farmann, and I have been part of the Saga Farmann guild since 2021. I take advantage of sailing her as preparations to use our own ship from 2024.  You will find me at stages 1 and stage 8 as Tack-man.

I am Martin Gundberg from Roskilde, Denmark. I have been sailing square sail for four years at the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde, Denmark. Mainly the large longship "The Sea Stallion from Glendalough" (with a around 60 other sailors onboard), but also the smaller ships, for training. I am 58 years old and find the vikingships a fantastic invention - both to sail and in historical perspective (no viking ship - no viking age). I am looking very much forward to this adventure and the experience to sail with Saga Farmann.

These have developed over thousands of years. We should not forget how to build and sail wooden boats, just because we now have plastic. I like to take part in the preservation of traditions and technology, and the Saga Farmann expedition will be both. I will be on several stages.

Hello, I am Rolf Dybdal from Norway. A Saga Farmann boat guild member since 2021. Born in Ringerike in the inland of Norway 54 years ago, and an eager volunteer at the Hardraade vikingship guild where I get to pursue my interests in traditional woodworking, and I am really looking forward to participate as a crew member on stage 8. Hopefully I will learn a lot of new skills.

I am Bjørn-Erik, born in Oslo 1947. Looking forward to sail in Istanbul. My sailing experience is from the North, sailing around Spitsbergen, and in the Baltic Sea. I have taken part in the Saga Farmann guild for four years. 

I will be a Medic on board on stages 7 and 8. I am from Sandefjord, but live in Hvasser about 30 min from Tønsberg. This is my second expedition with Saga Farmann and I am really looking forward to sailing, blue seas and many new experiences with a great crew.

I am Odd Sverre (71), from Stavern, Norway. I have retired after working in the construction industry and the education sector, with the last 20 years at the University of Southeast Norway. Living for some time in Sandefjord I discovered the Viking ship Gaia, I joined the crew and eventually became an approved captain (høvedsmann). With Gaia I have had a lot of adventures, like participate in the Brest International Maritime Festival in Brest, Brittany.  Through my interest in Gaia and Viking ships, I got to know some of the vikings from Tønsberg.  I have been following their work with shipbuilding in Tønsberg, and offered to contribute if they needed crew for the epic journey they set out on to Miklagard. And now it comes true! This is my first trip on Saga Farmann. I will be Number One on the last stage – in the Bosporus and Istanbul area. 

My interest for viking tradition started with the construction of Saga Oseberg – where I volunteered – and has only grown since. I've been the leader of the Oseberg textile group for 11 years and have been sailing with three different ships on countless expeditions. I love teaching and guiding groups that are interested in viking times and traditions, as well as rowing and sailing. I'm looking forward to sailing on the rivers and experiencing this ship in a new way.

I have been interested in the Viking Era for many years, with the focus on the connection with the Byzantine Empire.. It was my idea to take Saga Farmann to Miklagard. My main task in the organization with other people is promoting and financing the building of our viking ships.

Transplanted Englishman, now living in warm and sunny southern Norway, I’ve been playing on boats since I was little, luckily, all over the world, usually in the warmer parts, sometimes even getting paid for it. Other than that I flew helicopters both in the USA, and here in Norway, ending up flying Search and Rescue out of our base in Hammerfest, northern Norway. I have been sailing and working on Saga Farmann since 2019, and am looking forwards to sailing her into Istanbul.

I have been with Saga Farmann since 2020. I have traveled a lot around the world, but this journey is unique. I currently work as a technical manager at BI Norwegian Business School. I am from Oslo. 56 years old.  I have extensive experience with scientific excavation projects in arctic regions, as well as other projects. I have also owned an old fishing boat in the past.  My drive is adventure, new friendships, exploring new waters, doing something sustainable with others. Live a little in another time. The Viking Age.

I live in Tønsberg and I am 54 years old. I enjoy experiences a bit on the edge of the comfortable life. Sailing a Viking ship is exciting and challenging, and I learn something new all the time, about history and sailing technique. I am working as a Deacon in the cathedral of Tønsberg. I take part in this expedition in order to challenge myself, tell people about Viking history and experience how the Vikings travelled on European rivers and seas.

Over the years I have developed a passion for Viking ships; The process of building them as well as the knowledge on how to sail them.  With a background as Engineer, IT service provider and business manager I bring various skillset to the planning of the voyage as well as engineering on board.

My interest for Viking ships and viking life, started with me spending weekends and holidays for two years, taking part in the building of a replica of the Oseberg ship. Later I moved to Tønsberg, and have been a part of the viking ship community ever since, sailing to other countries and up Norwegian fjords. Looking forward to explore the cultural differences and hospitality along the European waterways.

I am 60 years old, I am a science teacher and a member of the viking group "Olav's Men". In August 2018, my wife and I decided to join this voyage with Saga Farmann from Tønsberg to Istanbul (called Miklagard by the vikings). We have been members of the Farmann Boat Guild since March 2019, spent many hours working on the ship, and sailed with Saga Farmann every summer and several weekends every year.  Knowing that the Vikings were craftsmen, sailors, tradesmen and adventurers, I look forward to sailing the last stage on the Black Sea and into the great city of Miklagard.

I am from the island of Nøtterøy, and I have learned the craft of boatbuilding. I have had the great pleasure of participating in the building of Saga Farmann right from the beginning, first as a boatbuilder, and later as leader for the building project.  The idea of sailing into Istanbul, and seeing Hagia Sophia growing taller and taller as coming closer has been a dream since the idea was launched. 

This voyage will be my first experience with Saga Farmann. I have participated in other historic recreation voyages and when I heard of this expedition I was excited to participate. I look forward to sailing on the Black Sea, somewhere I have never been, with my fellow crewmembers, getting to know them and learn about the Viking voyages.

I have been a member of the Saga Farmann boat guild since we started in 2018 and have been on expedition with her on several occasions!  Earlier on I have been sailing with our sister ship Saga Oseberg from Norway to Denmark, and with several other Viking ships around the fjords in Norway. I`m from Tønsberg, the oldest town in Norway. In my spare time I`m a scout leader as well. I love to spend time in the outdoors so living on the deck of the ship suits me fine. Sailing in the Black Sea will be a real adventure that I`m looking forward too. 

Talkative, quick witted and eager to explore are the words many would use to describe me. I am not the most experienced sailor or viking but I am joining the crew eager to learn, and explore this world. I will try to be eyes from the sky, and scout for possible security threats, as well as create some amazing footage of the journey.

I have spent most of my life on shore, but enjoyed summers at sea. I am comfortable with life in the wild, a a simple life like the vikings had. Saga Farmann is a solid ship moving with the sea and not against it due to the hull's flexible construction. After several years of training, I was appointed Captain (Chieftain) of the ship and crew. My responsibility is to make sure ship and crew arrives safely, having a good time en route.

My upbringing in Nærsnes, by the Oslo fjord, where I still live, was strongly influenced by coastal culture. The sea was our road, and we did not have a car. My mates and I set out early on sea voyages with self-made rafts and small old wooden boats. The longest journey with the 19 feet gig "Forsøket V", ended in Tangier, Morocco. I have made three long journeys on the waterways of Europe. I am looking forward to leading the Viking ship Saga Farmann together with my shipmates, from Belgrade to the Black Sea.

I have worked in 7 different countries, among them India, Afghanistan etc, including working for UN. Safety has been on the agenda. Different cultures, religions, and how different people are living is one of my great interests. I am looking forward entering the ship in Belgrade together with the rest of the crew.

In my childhood, in Halden, I constructed rafts from driftwood, and in 2015 was part of the Kon-Tiki II expedition which sailed balsa rafts from Peru to Easter Island. Compared to a raft, Saga Farmann is an advanced ship, and I look forward to sailing her down the Danube, from Belgrade to the Black Sea. My drone will also come along to document an epic voyage. As the media officer, I'm interested in talking to local journalists along the route.

I'm an experienced woodworker from Gudbrandsdalen who has always liked: boats, water, and the ocean. My interest in Viking ships started in 2000 when I helped build and move a stave church from Norway to Vestmannaeyjar in Iceland (this was the gift from the Norwegian people to commemorate the 1000-year anniversary for the christening of Iceland). After I retired, I happily joined the crew that built Saga Farmann, and I've taken part in most summer voyages. The dream of a roundtrip expedition to Miklagard has been with me since I first used an axe on the ship. I take part in stage 5 and 6, where I'm the Welfare officer and Medic, respectively. Eivind Luten's wild ideas will soon become reality – thank you, Eivind!

I spent most of my childhood abroad and have always been interested in my Norwegian heritage, including the Viking era. These ships enabled the Scandinavians to cover vast areas through travel over open sea and up rivers. When I discovered what they were doing and planning in Tønsberg, I wanted to be part of it, and I am very happy to participate in this expedition. My role onboard is welfare officer and apart from that to lend a hand whenever needed.

I have in my whole life been fascinated by the Viking history, I have made my self a «gildehall», have competed in ax-throw and like to use the long bow. Finely the last three years I have had the opportunity to sail the Viking ship, and I love it. Look forward to this journey.

Håvard Mogan Enerud, from Norway. I am the youngest onboard (28), but I am a professional sailor: I work as a 3. Officer on an oil tanker in the North Sea, and I am trained in both boat building and square sailing at Fosen Folk School. I have been square sailing since 2015, and I was one of the volunteers establishing the Farmann boat guild.  I will be Captain and Chief Engineer from Tønsberg to Lübeck.

I’m Linda Sten Vågsnes, a 32 year old history student from the Southern coast of Norway, living in Copenhagen. I love adventure and history, so it was a no brainer to join the guild when I learned that they were sailing a reconstructed viking ship to Istanbul. My favorite parts of the journey is the comeradship that develops when we are living and working so close together on board the ship, learning about the dynamics of navigating a vikingship on water and seeing Europe by traveling on her rivers.

I am Torstein (60), born and raised above the arctic circle in Narvik, Norway. In my daily life I am an entrepreneur and an accountant; Partner in Scandinavian Investment partners, and Chairman of the Board Nxt Gn Holding AS (Group). I have been a Saga Farmann Viking for about 2 years, and I will be attending three stages of the Saga Asia voyage; 6 weeks onboard. I am looking forward to all the meet & greet along our route, and promoting the Unesco world heritage spirit and our own brilliant example of its protectional programmes. I will be the Chief Engineer trainee on stage one, a sailer on stage two. I will also be in charge of telling all the tall tales on stage five, where I will also be The Chief Engineer.

Sverre is from Lom and is among other things, a skilled wood-carver.

Toril Sandtorv is from Åsgårdstrand, a village outside of Tønsberg, Norway. She says: Old ladies of 70 years don't stop challenging themselves - so here I come! She has been a part of the crew of Saga Farmann since the very beginning. You will meet me on stage five. 

Kristian is 76 years of age but says he is young at heart and still going strong. He lives at Jar outside Oslo. He has three children and eight grandchildren. Wanting to join Saga Farmann in 2019 he bought a gold coin, and now, after training and hard work, he is ready for the big adventure. He has promised to do whatever he is told on board. Kristian is the guy who reads books on history rather than on modern topics. You will meet him on stage five from Budapest.

 Hi. I am Stig from Norway. I am 59 years old and 2023 is my first year with Saga Farmann. I have some experience from other kinds of sailing. I have worked as a turist guide, UN solider, and 30 years as airline cabin crew. My place onboard is where I am needed on stage 5 from Budapest to Beograd. 

I was born in the first half of the previous century, and I grew up in the  woods north of Oslo.  After the 2WW my parents built a house from clay and straw. Nothing was impossible for them.  I inherited some of their  wisdom, and  it has been a good way to meet the world.  Call me an extroverted melancholic and a mercenary soul.  Before I joined the vikings I had no experience with salty water and ships.  I was crew on Saga Farmann`s first voyage. Steep learningcurve.

My saying is: Do not let a handicap stop you from trying to expand and live your life to the best of your abilities. I have albinism which impair my sight. Feel free to ask questions. I am specialist in clinical psychology. Many years ago I: sailed my own boat from Trondheim to Oslo, climed  glaciers, was instructor of Norwegian folklore dancing etc. Enough of boasting  (I am from Bergen ).  I wish all of us a pleasant leg.

Proper food is a safety measure and I find it rewarding to make sure that the crew is well fed and thereby have the energy end focus to handle the ship in a safe manner. With a background from Ukraine I'm raised within a "field to feast" food culture, making tasteful meals from all sorts of fresh ingrediences.

Talkative, quick witted and eager to explore are the words many would use to descirbe Roy. He is not the most sailer or viking but is joinging the crew eager to learn, and explore this world. He will bring his production skills along with him, and help share the interesting culture and, people that are on the way to Istanbul.

New to Saga Farmann boat guild and excited and grateful to contribute to and participate in this extended Viking ship journey. Viking ships have always held a special allure for me with their sweeping lines and symmetrical construction that requires both art and science. While the trip itself will likely be a keystone accomplishment in my personal saga, I also look forward to the forging of the fellowship amongst the crew members.

I am a born and bred Shetlander having spent all my working life at sea. I retired in October 2022 and as a retirement present to myself I sailed from Jakarta to Mauritius onboard the Statsraad Lehmkuhl where I met Dan Cato and was introduced to the Saga Farmann expedition. I was immediately hooked and applied. I am so looking forward to Stage 3 of the expedition!

My name is Arndis Skardevi, I am from Denmark. I have been sailing viking ships in Roskilde, Denmark, since 2017, and have sailed Saga Farmann since 2022. I have an open mind to whatever adventure the voyage and the ship will bring.

This is my first expedition with Saga Farmann! I’m from Tønsberg, and remember going to visit the vikingships at the dock when I was a kid, so getting the opportunity to live and work on one of the ships is exciting! Living, cooking, working and sleeping on the deck of the ship is the part of this trip that I’m most looking forward to, and as media officer I’ll be responsible for documenting all of this through photography.

Holaa! I’m Fernando and was born and raised in Mexico City. When I was 18 years I moved to Rotterdam to study. Somewhere along that journey, I met a Norwegian girl and to prove to her I can be the one, I’ll gladly join the Saga Farmann trip and learn the Viking ways. I have dreamed of sailing with Saga Farmann since the ship was built. 14 days in an almost open boat sounded scary, but I'm well prepared. Travel and adventure have always fascinated me, so I have created a job that supports my lifestyle. There I help people follow their dreams.

I'm an Norwegian chef with some interest in the vikings, and I am a "first timer" on the voyage and excited to see what will come out of it and get some first hand experience on what the vikings did in the past. There is much to see and learn and I can't wait to get started.

Born in the northern Norway and raised on a farm where one of the famous Vikings, Torolf Kveldulfson- Eigil Skallagrimsons uncle lived. When I was a kid I spent much time fishing from our rowboat. The boat had a vikingshape. After school I spent one year as Ordinary Seaman onboard an old Norwegian cargoship (the US west-coast and the far East). That’s way back. Nowadays I am a retired lawyer, occupied with kajaking, gardening, skiing, roaming in the mountains and forests. And working on my little farm in the middle of Norway. I’m looking forward to sailing the viking ship, Even if it’s on the river (I’ve been canaling two times in England - just me and my wife, in a boat for two).

I am Kjersti Marken from Norway. (61) I am a mother and a grandmother, and I earn a living as a vicar (pastoring a Norwegian community). I have been part of the Saga Farmann adventure since 2015 and was elected for the first board of directors of the Saga Farmann boat guild. I wanted one of the sailing stages, and you will find me onboard from Tønsberg to Lübeck.  

I am Rolf Krohg-Sørensen from Norway. After I retired as a headmaster of a school in Asker I was a part of the team building Saga Farmann for two years, and founded the Saga Farmann guild together with Håvard Mogen Enerud. From 2019 to 2020 I was leader of the of the first board of directors, and have been sailing the ship since 2018. I am looking forward to gathering more sailing-experiences with Saga Farmann along the Bohuslãn coast and in Denmark with a great crew. I will be captain and Next in command, as well as shipmate on the first leg. 

My name is Mattias Wallenberg, (53) from Kungälv, Sweden. My family consists of Jenny and 2 teenage boys Erik and Thor. On weekdays, I work as loading  master in Gothenburg's oil port. In my spare time I enjoy cooking and outdoor life such as hunting and fishing. I am very grateful that I get to join and participate in stage 1 as a chef.

Hello, I am Ingun Nerlie, I live in Kongsberg, (Norway), about 1.5 hours by car north-west of Tønsberg, Norway. I live here with my husband Trond, a dog, two cats, five hens and a rooster. We have two adult children and one, soon to be three grandchildren.  I have been part of the Farmann guild since the ship was launched in autumn 2018. I will participate in three stages. 1, 3 and 8. They are all very different, and on this first leg I am looking forward to being part of the start of the whole voyage, and the sailing.
